CCFA Doctor Wins MacArthur 'Genius Grant' for His Study of the Digestive Tract
CCFA doctor and Caltech Microbiologist Sarkis Mazmanian (pictured above) won one of this year's MacArthur Foundation Genius Awards for his work on exploring the relationship between the immune system and the microbes that are found in the digestive tract. Mazmanian is applauded for his modern approach to microbiology, which could lead to more treatments for several of today's diseases and conditions.
"Ten years ago, I realized that most of the organisms we come into contact with in our environment are not bad -- they don’t cause disease," Mazmanian said to the Los Angeles Times. "The great majority of them are quite innocuous. And some of them are actually beneficial. Some of them promote health. And no one was studying these organisms."
