Going Back to School: Making IBD as Easy as ABC

Going back to school can be exciting, but also stressful for kids and teens with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). CCFA's National Youth Leadership Council works to increase awareness of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis through youth-focused advocacy and fundraising. These college students have some great tips to share on managing IBD at all levels of education:
  1. Meet with your school nurse to discuss and establish a medication schedule
  2. Create a plan now for future absences -- include ways to get assignments and class notes and how you will make up exams
  3. Make an accommodations checklist -- determine if you will need an unlimited bathroom pass, water bottle, supply bag, rest period, or other accommodations
  4. Is your college far from home? Look for a CCFA chapter near your school to get involved in local events
  5. For advice on telling a friend you have IBD, living with roommates, and more, watch this video
  6. Visit CCFA's Kids and Teens website to find specialized information on coping in school and other helpful tips
  7. Review CCFA's new fact sheet, "Managing IBD as a Young Adult."
Looking for more information on getting ready for school with IBD? Download copies of CCFA's new brochures: "A Guide for Teachers and Other School Personnel" and "A Guide for Parents." You'll find them both available on our educational brochures page.
