Ostomy Case Exchange Program

CCFA's newest program on ostomy addresses the lack of knowledge and fear that may delay necessary surgery for patients facing a procedure involving formation of a stoma. Information and counseling by a knowledgeable physician eases the decision making process for a patient. It is, therefore, important that primary care physicians and community gastroenterologists be educated about the technical and quality of life issues regarding stomas.

Two leading colon and rectal surgeons (Dr. Janice Rafferty and Dr. David Beck) present actual cases. The cases are followed by a panel discussion led by the current President of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Dr. Ann Lowry. This program is CME accredited. Learning Objectives include:

  • Discuss the indications for a stoma
  • Recognize and differentiate the types of stomas
  • Identify patients who would benefit from surgery requiring a stoma
  • Describe to patients procedures requiring a stoma and alternative procedures
  • Explain adequately quality of life benefits and risks of delaying surgery to a patient

This Webcast is supported by an educational grant from ConvaTec, a Bristol Myers Squibb Company.
