Nearly 80 patient advocates, (over a dozen under the age of 18) from targeted districts all over the country, gathered in Washington, D.C. for our two-day National Advocacy Conference. This conference provides us an opportunity to visit with legislators from targeted districts and ask them to support the IBD Research Enhancement Act. These patient advocates, many first-time Hill visitors, had an action-packed forty-eight hours! On Wednesday, advocates and legislators attended a reception on the Hill where Mark Goldman, Chairman of the Board, presented both Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and Rep Michael Castle with the Foundation's Public Policy Leadership Award for their support and dedication to our IBD legislation. That evening, everyone attended a dinner where President Rick Geswell welcomed everyone to Washington and offered some motivational and inspiring words. Dr. R. Balfour Sartor presented an overview of the "state of the art" IBD research. The program was attended by members of the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (NASPGHAN), highlighting the importance of partnership for the success of this legislation. Early Thursday morning, advocates met for breakfast before leaving for meetings with their legislators to ask for the support of the IBD Research Enhancement Act. Many also met with legislators who have championed our cause in the past, thanking them and asking that they continue their support. Thanks again to all patient advocates who attended Day on the Hill!
