WHO: Collectively known as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are chronic digestive diseases affecting over 1.4 million Americans. Due to the complexity of, and stigma attached to these diseases that inflame the digestive tract, a great deal of awareness and insight into the diseases is lacking. As very personal diseases often causing persistent diarrhea, fever, and weight loss, patients often don't feel comfortable talking about life with IBD with others, and seek answers to disease-specific questions from trusted sources such as the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation. Whether a patient is newly diagnosed, has lived with Crohn's or colitis for years, or has a loved one who suffers from IBD, it is important to understand the impact of these diseases on day-to-day life.

About Crohn's Disease & Ulcerative Colitis Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis are painful, medically incurable illnesses that attack the digestive system. Crohn's disease may attack anywhere from the mouth to the anus, while ulcerative colitis inflames only the large intestine (colon). Symptoms may include abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, rectal bleeding, fever and weight loss. Many patients require hospitalization and surgery. These illnesses can cause severe complications, including colon cancer in patients with long-term disease.
